Some Call It A Sweep, We Call It A Sweep Weekend
The Colorado Select 16 AAA squad played their first two league games against in-state rival U16 Lady Roughriders this past weekend.
Game one was at the Edge in the comfort of the Select home rink. The Select ladies played a tough and physical game against the Rough Riders. The first two periods both teams played a rugged style and though the game was a bit sloppy there was plenty of action. Both teams found the net in the first and second period a lot. A total of seven times between the two teams. After the first two periods the Select ladies had a 4-3 lead. The third period belonged to the Select as they controlled he pace of the game and kept sustained pressure on the Rough Riders. The team scored two more goals and without allowing a goal to take home the first league win of the season, and the home opener. Final score Colorado Select 6 – Lady Rough Riders 3. A great first game for the ladies of the Select 16U AAA team.
Game two would appear to be a tougher set of circumstances as the Select Ladies had to travel early to Superior, Co. and play in hostile territory. The game was played at the newly but unfinished Sports Stable, home of the Lady Rough Riders.
The game started out fast and very physical as both teams tried to establish themselves. The Rough Riders would score the first goal of the game, giving them their first lead of the weekend. The Select would counter with their own goal and then took control of the game by scoring an additional three straight goals. The ladies played a solid team game in all three zones. They dominated the game with unselfish team play. The Select U16 AAA team finished a long and tough weekend playing their best hockey and winning the second game 4-1, thus completing the SWEEP of the in-state rival Lady Rough Riders.
Head Coach Eric Mayhew said "I was very proud of the girls’ intensity and effort this weekend. The girls played hard and battled every shift of every period until the end of the game. It's huge to be able to beat your in-state rival when you play them. We still have some work to do but are moving in the right direction and I can't wait to see how far we can grow as a team and the players develop as athletes on the ice."
Assistant coach David Fromm said "The girls played a very complete style of hockey and held one another accountable, and supported one another, mistakes and all. It was great to see these young ladies and high-level athletes sacrifice and compete for the team and the program. I am very proud of all of them. I am looking forward to seeing how they all evolve this season"
Congratulations to all of the Select U16 AAA team for a two-win weekend, and playing at a very high level of compete. Next up for the Select U16 AAA team is Minnesota NIT CCM Invite.

The Colorado Select U19 AAA team went 1-4 over the weekend of October 2nd in Exeter New Hampshire. The team had a great weekend and their record didn't represent the team's success. The team has shown great improvement since the last tournament weekend they had. The girls are buying into the structure and work ethic that the coaching staff expects from the team, and that showed on the ice.
The Exeter event was a college recruiting showcase that was attended by several dozen colleges scouts and coaches from women's hockey programs all over the northeast. The interest that the college coaches showed in the Select players made it a successful trip. The team received looks from D1 and D3 NCAA teams over the course of the weekend, which included a visit to New England College. In the coming months, the Colorado Select is excited to see college opportunities present themselves to many of the U19 AAA players.
The Colorado Select Girls Hockey Association (Colorado Select) is the first and only all girls’ hockey association in the state of Colorado. We are a hockey organization devoted to promoting and expanding girls’ hockey in Colorado. The purpose of the Colorado Select Girls Hockey Association is to foster the development of young girls in their pursuit of excellence in a team sport. We want to support the girls of Colorado who want to play a sport that can take them into district championships, college scholarships and even to gold medals. Scholarship and educational opportunities are rapidly increasing as more and more programs are developed.
The Colorado Select Girls Hockey Association has been host to several visits from USA Hockey already this season. Two of the more memorable visits where documented on video by USA Hockey. First CSGHA hosted a USA Hockey ADM clinic and demonstrated what makes us the only all girls USA Hockey ADM Model Association in the country. Most recently the CSGHA hosted a visit by members of the 2014 USA Hockey Women's National Team. Check out the videos of both events.
