DIRECTOR OF HOCKEY OPERATIONS & PLAYERS DEVELOPMENT

Bryan Smith

Director of Hockey Operations & Player Development

Bryan Smith

Colorado Select Girls Hockey Association is excited to announce the appointment of Bryan Smith as the new CSGHA Director of Hockey Operations & Player Development. Bryan started with the Select leading the Recreational Hockey component of the association as the Director of Recreational Hockey.  He will now take on leadership of the Tier Hockey Program as well, as the association brings all of hockey operations back under the leadership of a single Director of Hockey.  Bryan has been charged with working closely with the CSGHA Coaching Staff and Board of Directors in bringing the Colorado Select Girls Hockey Association back as the prominent elite all-girls hockey association in the Western US and back to national recognition.  According to Bryan, he is “excited for the opportunity to help bring this organization back together and move it forward as a national and state wide powerhouse in girls hockey.”

Before joining CSGHA in May 2016, he is the current owner of Rocky Mountain Hockey Schools for the past 12 years. Additionally, Bryan served as the first ever Hockey Director for Summit Hockey in Breckenridge. He also has several years of coaching experience that not only include six years of boys Tier I and four years of high school hockey with Summit High School, but having coached over 100 games overseas in Europe and Scandinavia.  His coaching experience spans all levels and age groups of both boy’s and girl’s youth hockey.

Since joining CSGHA he has been a leader in rebuilding and organizing the Recreational program.  He has recently launched a very successful effort call the Colorado Select Futures, to bring new players into the association at the 8U, 10U, and 12U levels who have never played hockey before.  Bryan has brought not only a wealth of experience to the Select, but also a serious passion for growing the game of hockey from the 8U level up.  He fully expects to apply this passion and all he has learned about the association over the last several months to moving the Tier Program to an even higher level.

Bryan, who grew up in Michigan, currently resides in Evergreen with his wife, Carisa, and their 28-month old son Waylon.  Bryan says he is “in love with the west and Colorado and will always live here.”  Hockey is a family affair for the Smiths, his wife Carisa, played college hockey & soccer, and the two of them met through a mutual hockey friend.  Bryan says he “loves being a papa” to Waylon, and that it “has opened my eyes in so many positive ways in both his personal and professional life.”

Evan Minnick

Colorado Select Specialty Skills Coach

Evan Minnick - Select Skills Coach

Coach Evan returns to The Colorado Select where she played for seven years on the 15U, 16U, and 19U AAA teams.  Evan returned to Colorado following a very successful Division I playing career to be part of the hockey development program at Ricci Hockey, and returned to the Select last season as an on ice skills coach for the 16U and 19U AAA Teams.

Evan grew up playing hockey for the Littleton Hawks and seven years for The Colorado Select, concluding her tenure as Captain of the 19U AAA team.  She led that 19U AAA team to second place finish in the Midwest Elite Girls Hockey League in 2005-06, where she had an honorable mention for the league’s all-star team, and third place at the USA Hockey Nationals. The career she had with The Colorado Select was made possible by the fact that her father founded the association to give girls, like Evan, a competitive alternative to moving away to boarding school for hockey.  At the end of her career with The Colorado Select, the association retired her jersey number (25).

Following her success at The Colorado Select she attended the USA Hockey Select 17/18 Camp in Lake Placid, NY in July 2006.  Her success followed her to NCAA Division I hockey where she was a four-year scholarship athlete for the Colgate Raiders.  In her four years at Colgate she played in 140 games where she amassed 68 career points, and was second on the team in points her senior year.  As a freshman, she earned the team’s “Most Improved Player” award.

Evan’s playing career did not end when she graduated from Colgate in 2010.  She went on to play one year of hockey for the ESC Planegg in Munich, Germany playing in the Elite Women's Hockey League (EWHL). Created in 2004 by International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF), the EWHL consists of teams from five countries in Central Europe.  She finished her only season of overseas hockey with 34 points, which helped her team to a German Championship and third place finish in the EWHL.  Evan was ranked 10th in the league in points, was named one of the top 3 forwards in the EWHL, and was named to the EWHL All-Star team.

Of her playing experiences in college, Evan has this to say, “Playing in college was definitely an adjustment as I went from being one of the top players for The Colorado Select to one of many top players from around the country.  I really had to find my place on the team and learn what my strong points were so that I could focus on those skills and really hone in on what would make me successful and help the team.”  She reiterates what the players at The Colorado Select have heard from others who have had success at the collegiate level, “Colgate definitely pushed me not only on the ice but academically as well.  Playing Division I hockey forced me to be really good at time management - balancing rigorous academic expectations alongside a full time hockey schedule was challenging, but definitely rewarding.”

Evan brings an understanding of commitment to The Colorado Select organization that she has demonstrated throughout her playing career. She knows what it takes to build a successful career as an elite female hockey student-athlete.  Coach Evan will be on the Select staff as a skill coach for every team in the whole association.
