Many coaches have made
it mandatory that their players wear neck guards during practice and games and
have been doing so for a few years. Neck guards do not protect you when getting
hit with the puck, but they do help prevent serious lacerations from skates and
sticks.
At the coaches'
meeting last night, we went over the dangers of these sorts of injuries. It is now
mandatory that all Colorado Select players for teams competing from the U8 through U14
recreational and competitive teams wear neck guards during practice and games.
Effective November 1,
coaches at the U8-U14 levels have been asked to enforce compliance with this
mandate by excusing players from games and practice if they do not have all
mandatory safety equipment, including neck guards.

by Marcey Robinson, MS, RD, Exercise Physiologist
Saturday, October 21, 2006
6:00 pm – 7:30 pm
The Peak Athletic Center
As an athlete you expect a lot from your body. You attend long practices, work hard and expect top notch performance during games. Are you sometimes disappointed that despite all your efforts, you still don't feel as though you are performing at your best? Have you thought about the role nutrition plays in fueling your body? Poor quality food choices can mean poor quality fuel and turn into poor sport performance. Don't let this happen to you! Come and learn how to use nutrition to fuel your body and get a "bite" ahead of the competition.
Marcey Robinson, MS, RD, Exercise Physiologist:
In 1999 Ms. Robinson became a dietitian and began her career in nutrition counseling to help individuals and athletes improve health, prevent disease and fuel sport performance. She continued her education and received a Master's degree in Exercise Physiology from Colorado State University in 2005. During her time at CSU, she worked as a campus dietitian and sports dietitian to college athletes. As an athlete herself, she continues to practice as a sports dietitian and motivate athletes to use nutrition in order to reach their goals both on and off the playing field.
Colorado Select would like to invite all players, parents, coaches and managers to attend this vital nutritional seminar on October 21, 2006, at 6:00pm, The Peak athletic center. Cost will be $3 per person (coaches/managers are free), collected at the door. Mark your calendars and plan to attend!

Body Contact vs. Body Checking
This
document (in MS Word format) describes the difference between "body
contact" and "body checking" as defined by the IIHF (International Ice
Hockey Federation) which governs both women's and men's hockey in the
Olympics. Hopefully recognizing these differences may help our parents
and players better understand officials’ calls during our own game
situations.
