The Colorado Select Girls Hockey Association (Colorado Select) is the first and only girls’ hockey association in the state of Colorado and is the premier girls hockey program in the Rocky Mountains. In 2009, Colorado Select teams at the U12, U14, U16 and U19 age divisions swept the USA Hockey Rocky Mountain Girls District Tournament, to advance to the USA Hockey National Championships. The Colorado Select U19 AAA finished 3rd in the nation at this years’ USA Hockey Girls National Championship Tournament! With a dozen teams for the 2009/2010 season the Colorado Select will continue to be one of the largest girl’s ice hockey organizations in the country.
Unlike many other youth hockey programs that have a girls’ team or two, with the Colorado Select, girls’ ice hockey is not an after-thought, IT IS THE ONLY THOUGHT!
Many young women have thought of becoming a Select player but have been reluctant to call us or try out for one of our teams. Some common misconceptions are:
- I’m not good enough to play on a Select team
- I’m too young to be a Select player
- I have to be invited to tryout for a Select team
- The Select only have travel teams
- I live too far from Denver to play for the Select
None of this is true! We offer programs for all levels, from the beginner to the elite. Our Tier I AAA program provides premier training, exposure and competition for players who want to pursue elite level and/or collegiate ice hockey. Players on the Colorado Select’s U16 and U19 teams are consistently recruited by the top DI and DIII schools throughout the country. Past graduates of our program have played and are playing for institutions such as at Boston College, Minnesota, Yale, North Dakota, Northeastern College, Clarkson University, Gustavus Adolphus College, University of Wisconsin – Eau Claire, Connecticut College, Concordia College, Augsburg College, Trinity College, Hamline University, Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, Middlebury College, Neumann College and others. If your goal is to play in college, it is essential to be involved in a program that will provide you consistent exposure to college scouts, and the Colorado Select has a proven track record in assisting its players in attaining their college goals.
In 2005/2006, the Colorado Select instituted the first of its “Tier II”- level teams. In light of the success of this team, the Select continues to offer Tier II-level teams at both the U16 and U19 age division for the 2009/2010 season. These teams are designed to develop the skills of players who have a strong desire to play at the elite AAA level. With USA Hockey instituting an official Tier II level for Girls’ Hockey this season, Colorado Select plans to be as strong at the Tier II level as they are at Tier I.
Whether you are just starting out or have played for years, the Colorado Select has a program to fit your needs. Our recreational programs provide the foundation, training and competition to take the new player to the next level. The Colorado Select has teams for girls as young as six to teams for seniors in high school. While we are very proud of the accomplishments of the elite players who have played and still do play for the Colorado Select, we are just as proud of the players who spend a season working hard and developing their skill on one of our recreational teams. To watch a player progress throughout a season and be miles ahead of where she was when she hit the ice in September is just as exciting as winning a District Championship and competing for the National Title.
