Nicole Hensley Attends Warren Strelow National Team Goaltending Camp

Lindenwood University freshman goaltender and Colorado Select 2012 alum Nicole Hensley was one of ten women goalies in the country selected to attend the sixth annual Warren Strelow National Team Goaltending Camp from May 9-12 in Ann Arbor, Mich. The camp features the top goaltenders eligible for international play in select age groups.

The four-day elite camp covers the physical and mental aspects of the goaltending position, helping each goaltender master the fundamentals of the position while developing a personal identity that translates into game success.

The camp is led by Mike Ayers, the goaltending coach of USA Hockey's National Team Development program and the coordinator of the organization's Warren Strelow National Goaltending Mentor Program. Also coaching at the camp are Ty Conklin, former NHL and World Championship goaltender, and former NHL and Olympic goaltender John Vanbiesbrouck.

Hensley was named the top rookie goalie in NCAA Division I after her stellar freshman season in 2012-13. She led the nation with 1083 saves. She had a 3.42 GAA and a .922 save percentage for the Lady Lions.

Lyndsey Fry Helps Team USA Win Gold

Colorado Select Alum Lyndsey Fry, a current Harvard University junior forward, was one of 23 players on the roster for Team USA in its winning of a gold medal at the 2013 IIHF Women's World Championship in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada on April 2-9 (see stories below).  The USA Hockey Women's National Team defeated Canada 3-2 to claim gold in the championship game and  went 4-0-0-1 during the week-long tournament. Team USA outscored its opponents 17-7 during the five games.  Lyndsey played in 4 games and had 6 shots on goal.  During the 2012-13 season, Lyndsey helped the Crimson post a 24-7-3 record and carry Harvard to its first NCAA tournament berth since 2010. Fry, a native of Chandler, Ariz., was second on the team with 16 goals and 20 assists for 36 points and tied for the squad's lead with five game-winning scores.  Lyndsey is the first male or female ice hockey player born in Arizona to be selected to Team USA. The Colorado Select is very proud of Team USA and especially our own Lyndsey!  Congratulations and good luck at the 2014 Olympic Games!

Nicole Hensley Named to National All Rookie Team

Lindenwood women's hockey goalie Nicole Hensley, a Colorado Select Alumni, was named to the National USCHO All-Rookie team on Friday, March 28.  Hensley was joined on the National All-Rookie team by defensemen Erin Ambrose (Colgate) and Alexis Crossley (New Hampshire), and forwards Hanna Brandt (Minnesota), Haley Skarupa (Boston College), and Sarah Lefort (Boston).

Hensley led the nation last season with 1083 saves (see story below) and was 17th with a .922 save percentage. In conference play, she had a 7-4-3 record with a 2.39 GAA and a .939 save percentage. Hensley made headlines earlier in the month when she made 90 saves in a CHA playoff game against Robert Morris, 12 more than the NCAA Division I record for saves in a game (see story below).

Hensley was selected a second-team all-CHA performer this season. She was also named to the conference All-Rookie team and was the CHA Rookie of the Year (see story below).

At the College Hockey America Tournament Banquet held on March 7, Nicole Hensley, 2011 Colorado Alum and Lindenwood University freshman goalie,was named the CHA Rookie of the Year, was a unanimous selection to the All Rookie Team and was selected Second Team All Conference.  The Rookie of the Year Award is given to a first year player among those nominated for consideration who has shown skill, ability, and leadership beyond that expected of a player in her rookie year.  Nicole is eligible for the National Rookie of the Year as selected by conference commissioners.

She is first in the nation among goaltenders with 1083 saves, a Lindenwood record, and finished conference play with 557 saves, first all-time in CHA history, along with a 2.39 GAA.  Nicole finished second in the CHA with a .939 save percentage in league games, just .001 percent behind the league leader.  She finished the season with a overall 3.42 GAA and a .922 save percentage.  Hensley's final game of the season was one of the most memorable in the history of NCAA Division I hockey. She stopped 90 shots in the triple-overtime conference tournament game against Robert Morris University, 12 more saves than the NCAA Division I record. She allowed just two goals in that game and had a save percentage of .978 (see story below). Nicole was a five-time CHA Rookie of the Week selection, was named the CHA February Rookie of the Month and was named to the CHA Honor Roll four times (see stories below).  Congratulations on an outstanding freshman season Nicole!

 

Jordan Slavin and Ashley Furia Earn WCHA Academic Honors

Select Alums Jodan Slavin, a senior defenseman, and Ashley Furia, a senior forward/defensemen, for the North Dakota Fighting Sioux, have earned 2012-13 All-WCHA Academic Team Honors.  To qualify for the All-WCHA Academic Team, student-athletes must have completed one year of eligibility at their present institution prior to the current academic year and have a GPA of at least 3.0 for the previous two semesters or three quarters.

In addition, Jordan was the receipient of the WCHA Scholar-Athlete Award for 2012-13.  This was the third time she has won the award.  To earn recognition as a WCHA Scholar-Athlete, student-athletes must have completed at least one year of residency at their present institution prior to the current academic year and must also have a grade-point average of at least 3.50 on a 4.0 scale for the previous two semesters or three quarters, or may qualify if her overall GPA is at least 3.50 for all terms at her present institution.

Jordan and Ashley were able to play their final shift together as seniors at North Dakota on home ice as time ran out in a victory over Minnesota State on March 2 and then returned to the ice to give the fans one more victory lap and another salute at center ice.  Slavin, Furia and their Fighting Sioux teammates are currently preparing to face the Minnesota Gophers in the NCAA woman's ice hockey quarterfinals.  Congratulations Jordan and Ashley on the honor and good luck in the NCAA tournament!

Nicole Hensley Earns 5th College Hockey America Rookie of the Week Award

Colorado Select Alum and Lindenwood University freshman goaltender Nicole Hensley earned the College Hockey America Rookie of the Week Award on March 4.  This was the 5th time Hensley has won the award this season (3 of which were consecutive), along with one CHA Rookie of the Month Award for the month of February 2013 and 4 CHA Honor Roll Awards.  For the week, Nicole had a .960 save percentage and a 1.83 GAA in three games. She went 1-1-0 in the series with Syracuse, including making 42 of 43 saves in Lindenwood’s 2-1 win, the first win for Lindenwood over the Orange. In game one of the CHA Tournament against Robert Morris, she made 90 saves, 12 more than the NCAA Division I record for a game. The 90 saves set a CHA Tournament single-game and single-tournament record, and was a new Lindenwood single-game record. She had a .978 save percentage in that contest. For the week, Hensley made 168 saves and finished the season with 1083.  For the season, Hensley finished with a .922 save percentage and she recorded 1083 saves on the year, which is a new Lindenwood single-season record.

Hensley Sets NCAA D-I Record with 90 Saves

Lindenwood Lions women's ice hockey goalie and Colorado Select alum Nicole Hensley became the first NCAA Division I goalie to record over 80 saves in a game. The true freshman finished with 90 saves, but Lindenwood fell in triple overtime to Robert Morris (Pa.) by a 2-1 score. The game was the first in a best-of-three series in the first round of the College Hockey America Tournament.  Hensley bettered the NCAA Division I record of 78 saves which is held by Desi Clark of Mercyhurst. However, Hensley's record won't officially become the new NCAA mark since Lindenwood is in its provisional year of moving to the NCAA level. Hensley's 90 saves are a new Lindenwood record and also set CHA Tournament records for most saves in a game and most saves in a tournament.  Hensley kept the Lady Lions in the game despite being outshot 92-42. She made 51 saves in regulation and had another 39 saves in over 48 minutes of overtime play. The game was also the longest contest played in the history of the CHA Tournament.

Hensley Receives College Hockey America Rookie of the Month Award for February

Lindenwood University women's hockey goalie Nicole Hensley, freshman and Select Alum, was named the CHA Rookie of the Month for February. She is the first Lindenwood player to win one of the CHA monthly awards.  Hensley was the top reason why Lindenwood had its best month of its NCAA history in February. She went 5-1-2 in goal, allowed just over two goals a game, and had a save percentage of .946. Hensley, who won three consecutive CHA Freshman of the Week awards during February, saved at least 90 percent of the shots she faced in every game but one, and had over a .960 save percentage in half of the games.  One of her top performances was saving 42 of 43 shots in a 2-1 overtime victory over Syracuse. She saved a month-high 49 shots in a 4-2 win over Robert Morris. Hensley had three games of allowing just one goal, and two others with allowing a pair of goals. Hensley allowed just six power-play goals during the month and helped hold the opposing team scoreless on the power play four times, and only allowed more than one power-play goal in a game once.

 

Fry Named Second Team All Ivy League and Third Team ECAC All League

Colorado Select Alum Lyndsey Fry, a junior forward for the Harvard Crimson and a staple their first line, was selected to the second team All Ivy League and Third Team ECAC All League for the 2012-13 season.  Congratulations on a nice season Lyndsey!

Select Alums Taggart, O'Neil and Sunness Lead Stevenson in Inaugural Season

Colorado Select Alums and current Stevenson Mustang freshman forwards McKenzie Taggart and Molly O'Neil concluded the Mustangs' inaugural season as the leading scorers for the team, both netting 6 goals with Taggart notching 7 assists while O'Neil picked up 6 assists.  In the final game of the inaugural season against Buffalo State, McKenzie scored the first shorthanded goal in Stevenson progam history.  Freshman Emma Sunness, another Colorado Select alum, also logged plenty of ice time for the Mustangs on the defensive end.  With the strong Colorado Select influence on the Stevenson program, next year should be even more successful for the Mustangs!

Nicole Hensley Three-Peats as College Hockey America Rookie of the Week

Nicole Hensley, freshman goaltender for the Lindenwood Lions and a Colorado Select alum, made it three in a row as she earned the CHA Rookie of the Week award for the third straight week for the week of February 18. Hensley has now won the award four times this season and has been named to the CHA Honor Roll three times this season (see stories below).  Hensley led Lindenwood to its first ever CHA series sweep on Feb. 15-16 with 3-2 and 4-2 victories over Robert Morris. She made 88 saves on the week, had a 1.99 GAA, and a .957 save percentage. In the first game of the series, she stopped 39 shots. Sixteen of those saves came in the first period as she kept the game close despite Lindenwood being outshot by a 17-5 margin. She also stopped 11 shots in that game while Robert Morris was on the power play and held the Colonials to 0-for-five with a man advantage. In Saturday's victory, Hensley made 49 saves, stopped all 26 shots that she faced in the third period and allowed no power play goals in the game on 7 shots.  Nicole now leads the CHA in league games with a .939 save percentage. She is 4-0-2 during Lindenwood's current six-game unbeaten streak.

Taylor Gross and Jeanette Bateman Featured in Big Ten Network Report and Penn State Hockey Videos

Penn State junior forward Taylor Gross, the first NCAA captain of the Nittany Lions and a Colorado Select alum (see story below), was interviewed by the Big Ten Network in their video report on Penn State's first NCAA D-1 ice hockey season.  Colorado Select alum Jeanette Bateman, a freshman defenseman for the Nittany Lions (see story below), can also be seen in the video.  Taylor is also featured in a Penn State video displaying the new uniforms and discussing the inaugural season for the Nittany Lions and Also in the Penn State Media Day video, while Jeanette is featured in a "Meet Nette" introductory video for Penn State.

Sarah Nelson Named ECAC West Rookie of the Week

Potsdam Bears freshman forward Sarah Nelson, a 2012 Colorado Select Alum, was named the Eastern College Athletic Conference West Rookie of the Week for her play during the week ending February 17.  In a two game series with Buffalo State that the Bears needed to sweep to qualify for the ECAC West playoffs, Sarah had an assist on the game winning goal in a 4-3 win on Saturday and scored the lone goal in the Bears 1-0 win in Sunday's battle.  The game winner in the 1-0 victory on the Bears Senior Day came as Sarah jammed home her own rebound.  The victory pushed Potsdam over Cortland and Neumann for the last playoff spot in the ECAC West Tournament where the Bears will play Utica in the first round.  The Bears have now reached the playoffs in three of their first five seasons and for the second consecutive season.  Keep it up into the playoffs Sarah!

Hensley Earns Back-to-Back College Hockey America Rookie of the Week Awards

Nicole Hensley, a Select alum and freshman goaltender for Lindenwood University, earned the College Hockey America Conference Rookie of the Week Award for the second consecutive week and the third time this season (see story below). Nicole won the award for the week of February 11, 2012 for her play the prior weekend at Penn State, helping Lindenwood have a season-high four game unbeaten streak .  Against Penn State, Nicole went 1-0-1 with a 1.93 GAA and .938 save percentage, making 60 saves on 64 shots in the 2-game series.  Over her last four games against RIT and Penn State, she has a 1.93 GAA and a .942 save percentage.  Nicole currently leads the College Hockey America Conference with 827 saves on the season and is second in minutes played for goalies at 1247.

Nicole Hensley Earns Second CHA Rookie of the Week Award

Lindenwood Lion's freshman goaltender, Nicole Hensley, a Select alum, earned the College Hockey America Conference Rookie of the Week Award for the week of February 4, 2012 for the second time this season (see one of the stories below).  She has also been named to the College Hockey America Conference Honor Roll three times this season (see one of the stories below).  Nicole won the award for her play the prior weekend against RIT during Lindenwood's Paint the Rink Pink Weekend to raise money to fight breast cancer.  Against RIT Nicole went 1-0-1 with a 1.92 GAA and .946 save percentage, with no even strength goals scored against her while making 70 saves in the 2-game series.

Nicole Hensley Named to CHA Honor Roll

Select Alum and Lindenwood Lions freshman goaltender Nicole Hensley was named to the College Hockey America Honor Roll for the third time this season (see story below) for the week of January 14, 2012 for her play the prior weekend against Robert Morris University.  She picked up a 5-2 win on Friday night with a .942 save percentage.  Nicole had a .924 save percentage for the weekend, saving 73 of 79 shots before leaving the game Saturday with a concussion with 7 minutes minutes to play.  Recuperate fast Nicole!

Jordan Caldwell Named Captain at Plattsburgh State

Plattsburgh State Cardinals forward Jordan Caldwell, a Select Alum, has been named a captain of the Cardinals for the 2012-13 ice hockey season.  The Cardinals are currently undefeated and ranked #1 in the nation in D-III.  Although this is Jordan's senior season, she recenlty tore her ACL.  As a result, she is redshirting this year and will play a redshirt senior season for the Cardinals next year.  Good luck Jordan!

Aimee Dennett Named Captain of Williams Ephs

Colorado Select Alum Aimee Dennett has been named a captain of the Williams College Ephs for her senior season.  Head coach Meghan Gillis stated that Dennett is a strong leader and has a "tireless work ethic".  Congrats Aimee!

Erin Wente Sets Vermont Career Scoring Record

Alum Erin Wente, senior forward for the Vermont Catamounts, scored the 26th goal of her career against the Colgate Raiders, setting the career D-I scoring record for Vermont.  Erin is also the Catamounts' Team Captain this year. Congratulations Erin for a setting a great career mark!

O'Neil Shines in Codfish Bowl

Molly O'Neil, Select Alum and Stevenson College Mustangs forward, netted her second game-winning goal and team leading fifth goal of the season to lead Stevenson to a 3-1 win over Plymouth State in the consolation game of the 6th Annual Codfish Bowl tournament hosted by UMass-Boston.  Molly is tied with Colorado Select Alum McKenzie Taggart, also of Stevenson College, for 15th in the nation in points per game for rookies, each with 10 points in 12 games.

Jeanette Bateman Accomplishes a First for Penn State

Colorado Select Alum and Penn State freshman defenseman Jeanette Bateman  became the first player in Penn State D-I ice hockey history to record 3 assists in a game during Penn State's 10-0 win over Chatham University.

5th Annual Alumni Game and Winter Hockey Festival A Huge Success

The Colorado Select Girls Hockey Association held its 5th Annual Alumni Game and Winter Hockey Festival at the Edge Ice Arena on Saturday, December 22, 2012.  One of the main attractions of the event was the unveiling of the new CSGHA trophy case outside the CSGHA office.  Although it took some time in coming together, the final result is fantastic to showcase the association trophies and awards, including the medals won at Nationals.  The festivities started out with a silent auction of great sports and other items, along with event booths, which included the hardest shot competition.  The highlight of the day was a standing room only crowd for the battle between the current U19AAA team and the CSGHA Alumni back in town for the big game.  The game was followed by an autograph session by the alums. 

After introductions of all the players by CSGHA director Marnie Hill and the playing of the Canadian and U.S. National Anthems, the hockey battle was on.  The crowd enjoyed having Colorado Avalanche play-by-play announcer Mike Haynes call the action.  The game was initially close, but later broke open by the alumni lead by Molli Mott of St. Cloud State who notched 4 goals in the contest.  The alums skated home with an 8-2 win, bringing the alumni record to 2-3 in the annual battle enjoyed by all.  The alumni returning this year to play or watch the game included:

Select Alum Goes International With Professional Contract

Katy Walker, a CSGHA Alum and former Elmira College Soaring Eagle defenseman, has become the first Elmira College woman's ice hockey player to sign a professional contract.  Katy is currenty living in Minsk, Belarus and playing for the Pantera Hockey Club.  The team plays in the EWHL, comprised mostly of teams from western Europe - Italy, Switerland, Germany, Austria and Hungry.  Katie reports that everyone speaks Russian, but a few know English to help her translate and she lives with a Canadian she can talk to!  Congrats Katie for taking the Colorado Select both professional and international!

Hensley Named CHA Rookie of the Week

Select Alum Nicole Hensley, freshman goalie for the Lindenwood Lions, was named the College Hockey America Rookie of the Week for the week of December 17, 2012 for a weekend series with RIT, becoming the first Lady Lion to earn the Rookie of the Week Award and just the second Lady Lion ever to win a CHA Award. She also earned the first star of the game on RIT home ice. Select Alum Chloe Williams also played defense for Lindenwood against RIT.  Read more at: http://www.lindenwoodlions.com/news/2012/12/17/WHOCKEY_1217122538.aspx?path=whockey and at http://www.chawomenshockey.com/news/2012-13_News/awardwinners121712.  Click below to see the CHA highlight video.
 
Nicole was also named to the College Hockey America Honor Roll on October 1, 2012 for her first two collegiate starts against Ohio State on September 28-29, 2012 (read more at http://www.chawomenshockey.com/news/2012-13_News/awardwinners10112), and on November 19, 2012 for her series against Penn State on November 16-17, 2012 in which she notched her first collegiate win (5 -1)  (read more at http://www.chawomenshockey.com/news/2012-13_News/awardwinners111912).  Williams and Hensley played against Select Alumni Kendall Curtis (forward) in the Ohio State series and Janette Bateman (defense) and Taylor Gross (forward) in the Penn State series.  Hensley was also nominated for the College Hockey America Rookie of the Month for December 2012.

McKenzie Taggart Fuels First Ever Win for Stevenson Mustangs

 
McKenzie Taggart, a forward on the first Stevenson Mustangs woman's ice hockey team and a Colorado Select Alum, propelled the Mustangs to their first ever victory in school history in the second ever game in school history. Taggart had two assists to help lift Stevenson past Buffalo State. Colorado Select Alumni Molly O'Neil (forward) and Emma Sunness (defense) also played for the Mustangs. Select Alum Britany Ryan Named Captain of Trinity Bantams

Fry Leads Team USA to Gold at Four Nations Cup in Finland

Lyndsey Fry, Colorado Select Alum and current Harvard Crimson hockey player, helped the USA Women's National Hockey Team capture gold at the recent Four Nations Cup tournament held in Vantaa, Finland. Fry scored her first international goal, one that would prove to be the game-winner, in a 15-1 rout of Finland in round robin play. She also added two assists in the game to total three points. Select Alum, Nicole Hensley, Named Athlete of the Week!

Select Alumni, Nicole Hensley (Lindenwood University) was named Athlete of the Week at Lindenwood University.  Nicole stopped over 92 percent of the shots that she faced last weekend against Minnesota State, a squad receiving votes in a NCAA Division I national poll. She kept Lindenwood in both games by stopping 40 shots on Friday and 42 on Saturday. Three of the seven goals she allowed over the weekend came on power plays

Emily West brings NCAA Div I Trophy to the Select!

Last Friday, Select Alumni Emily West, member of the 2012 NCAA Women Ice Hockey Championship Minnesota Gopher team, brought the NCAA Div I Trophy to the Edge for our players!   Many pictures were taken and younger players got to see what hard work and determination can get you.  Special thanks to Emily for thinking of her Select Family and letting us all enjoy this moment with her!

 

CSGHA Alumn, Fry, Name Most Improved Player for Harvard

Harvard Sophomore, and CSGHA Alumn, Lyndsey Fry took home the Most Improved Player award!

Fry received the Most Improved Playeraward after a strong offensive year for the Crimson. Fry eclipsed the 40-pointbarrier with 22 goals and 20 assists, up from her rookie season totals of 11 points on six goals and five helpers. Fry became the first Harvard skater since Sarah Vaillancourt ’08-09 in 2006, to record back-to-back hat tricks, nettingfour goals in the regular season finale against Yale and scoring three in Game1 of the ECAC quarterfinals against Princeton.

Select Alumni, Fisher and Caldwell, celebrate with Plattsburg taking 3rd place in Division III National Championship

Colorado Select Alum, Justine Fisher and Jordan Caldwell celebrated with their team, Plattsburg, taking home a 3rd place victory in the NCAA Division III National Champsionship this past weekend.  Fisher scored the winning OT goal on a pass from Caldwell.

Select Alumni, Emily West, scores winning goal to lead the Gophers to a National Championship!

Former Select Alumni and senior for the Minnesota Gophers, Emily West, scored the winning goal on a penalty shot to give the Gophers the NCAA  Woman's Division I National Championship.  The Gophers beat Wisonsin 4-2.  Click here to read more.

Select Alumni, Maddy Charbonneau name EC Player of the Week!

Elmira, NY – Kevin Willer ’12 (Toronto, ONT -- North York Rangers) and Maddy Charbonneau ’14 (Greeley, CO -- Colorado Select) have been named EC Athletes of the Week for the week ending January 9th.

Charbonneau proved to be a catalyst for the Elmira College Women’s Ice Hockey team as she tallied a goal and an assist in a 3-0 win Friday evening at Manhattanville College. The defensemen fed Arden Cowley for her first career goal at the 13:44 mark of the first period, giving Elmira a 2-0 lead. Charbonneau tacked on an insurance goal early in the third period to help stave off any chance at a Valiant comeback bid.

Colorado Select 2011 Alumni Game

CSGHA 4th Annual Alumni Game!

Sunday Dec 18th marked the 4th annual playing of our CSGHA Alumni game.  We saw 31 out of our approximate 113  proud Select alumni at the game, 26 suited up to play in the game. This year we had a wide range of alumni grads, the oldest being a 2000 year grad Lacey Erickson who graduated in the Select's inaugural season.  The furthest to travel to the alumni game this year was Kassee Flint (Select grad 2010) who attends New England College and her home is in Oregon. Not only did she travel the furthest but she got the alumni on the board for their first tally of the game being down by 3 goals at that point.  First period was a back and forth battle trying to establish a balance of power.  The U19AAA team got on the board first with a goal that trickled through Amanda "Goose" Vandenberg's (2010, Colorado State) pads to open the scoring. The 19's jumped out to a 3-0 first period and played strong fundamental hockey and looked like a solid team working together to earn the three goal lead. The strong play of Senior goaltender Nikki Parker shut out the Alums in her 30 minutes of play.  The Alum scored in the second and the 19's matched with another goal to make it 4-1, 5-1 was the score at the end of two periods. The Alum had a surge finding the back of the net 3 unanswered times almost tying it with less than a minute in the game.  After a flurry of chances the 19's emerged victorious for the third time in the 4 years of the game.  An exciting finish to a great game.  Here is a list of the Alumni that attended the game this year either as a spectator or a player in the game.
