Karen attended and played four years of varsity NCAA hockey the University of Wisconsin, where she played in 137 games amassing 81 career points. Karen was awarded the Jeff Sauer Award in 2004 as voted by teammates, which is presented annually to the player who consistently demonstrates commitment to her teammates, coaches, and the sport of hockey.  She also received multiple conference awards including being named to the Western Collegiate Hockey Association (WCHA) All-Second Team in 2004, multiple WCHA offensive player of the week honors, the inaugural WCHA All-Star Team in 2002, and earning distinction as a Big Ten Scholar-Athlete & member of the WCHA All-Academic Team in 2003.

In her final three years at Wisconsin she played for Head Coach Mark Johnson, a member of the 1980 Men’s Goal Medal Olympic team and four time National Champion as the current University of Wisconsin head coach.  When asked what he thought about Karen’s appointment as ADoH/19U AAA Head coach, Coach Johnson said “I am excited for her and for you (the Select). She will do a great job for you and has such great experience to offer”.  Coach Johnson also said that as a player “Karen played at an extremely high level and was always willing to give back to the game, even when she was still playing”.

In addition to Karen’s significant coaching, player development, and playing experience, she will bring substantial experience in operations management.  Karen’s experience this area includes work done as a Director of Girl’s Hockey, but also working professionally in operational positions for both the Dallas Stars (NHL) and the Dallas Mavericks (NBA).

As Karen settles in to the Select, she will be responsible for a variety of areas in the association.  Karen will serve as the Head Coach for the 19U AAA team for the 2015-16 season.  In addition, she will be fill multiple roles focused on 14U – 19U age levels for the association including recruitment at all levels and ages; organize and run 14U through 19U tryouts; and association-wide scheduling.  Karen will also be responsible for player development at 14U through 19U age groups at all levels, which will include participation with on and off ice in-season practices; organization and coaching for off-season and in-season developmental clinics; development of on and off ice practice plans; and assist in the hiring, support, development, and mentoring of coaching staff.
