Going into the Junior Women's Hockey League (JWHL) Championship Tournament the Select 16U Tier I team was tied for last place with the Washington Price. Both teams had identical 1-7-3 league records. The season's lone win had come against the Boston Shamrocks in the last showcase of the season back in December. One might say that the Select 16U team was an underdog to play in the JWHL championship.
An opening loss to NAHA made a rough start to the weekend. The team came back the next day to play Boston to a 3-3 tie at the end of regulation and overtime. Only to see the win slip away in a shootout loss. The final game of the round-robin play was against Washington and would determine who advanced as the second seed to take on undefeated NAHA. Washington scored first in the first period and carried a one goal lead until Select tied the game in the second. Then with only a couple minutes to go Select took the lead 2-1 and held Washington off for the win, and the spot in the Championship game.
In the Championship game the team gave 18-0 NAHA all they could handle taking a 2-2 tie into the third period. NAHA scored three goals in the third to win the Championship, but the Select 16U team represented the CSGHA with great pride in coming away with the JWHL Silver Medal.
Next up is a three game series this weekend (March 11-13) against the Dallas Elite Stars in the Rocky Mountain District Tournament for a trip to the USA Hockey National Tournament. The team's record against Dallas this season is 4-1-1. The Districts schedule can be found on the CSGHA Calendar.
